Campaigns usually apply various communication instruments to reach specific goals. It’s a bundle of coordinated activities and measures incorporating content, time as well as technical requirements, all based on a specific concept or strategy.

The ultimate goal of the campaign is the starting point, which is normally defined by or developed in conjunction with the client. The following components are necessary for the definition of a campaign. Note that the pieces are usually interdependent, e.g., reaching a particular part of your target audience requires using a specific medium.

Briefing for a campaign

  • What are the main goals?
  • Which target group should be addressed?
  • What kind of offering should be advertized?
  • What are the measurable criteria determining success?
  • What is the timeline?

Definition of the campaign

The actual planning of the campaign starts when all of the 5 questions are answered properly. Starting with the initial answers, the campaign planning process begins and decisions concerning the implementation can be made.

Campaign planning is the part of the continuous process in which all required information and resources are identified and all activities and measures concerning content (offerings), (media specific) formats and (time/location) placing are defined. The key topics here are information (content), staffing, infrastructure and budgets.
